The Origins of Sellia Marina

Sellia boast a notable history, because it is one of the most ancient settlement of the area, with many linkages with Taverna and Catanzaro's history. The origin of the town is quite controversial: according to Galas’s “Cronaca”, Sellia was found between IX and X century by some refugees came from the ancient coastal town Trischene because they were escaping from Saraceni's attack. During their escape they reached the Sellion mountain whom position gived them protection, so there they found a new town called Asilia, now Sellia.

Then we have to spend a few word about Trischene. We know that when Calabria was under the heel of Bizantini, Saraceni attacked this coast, in the area between Squillace and Crotone, near the Marvotrinchison river (now Simeri) and Aroca river (now Crocchio), in particular Trischene, a populous town called like this because it is the union of three little town, with three churches. Trischene suddenly become a rich town, thanks to its position, but it was destroy by Saraceni, so its citizens escaped in safer place to build new village. A few people arrived to the Sellion mount where they build Asilia.
So is possible that Sellia was build from refugees from Trischene or maybe the town is more ancient as several find let us think. There isn't absolute certainly about the origin of Sellia.
